Bill Lettang is originally from New York City, but he has lived in western Massachusetts since the early ‘70s. He has been happily married for over 30 years, and considers himself blessed with the company of his mom and of his many great friends. Bill began playing drums as a self-taught musician. He went on to study with Bernard Purdie, Billy Cobnam, and Steve Gadd. He furthered his musical knowledge when he picked up the bass guitar in the early 1980s, and is currently teaching himself some piano. Some of his musical influences include Ringo Starr, Bernard Purdie, Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, and Steve Gadd, just to name a few. Over the years, Bill has performed with Kiss, The Bee Gees, Arlen Roth, Steve Moser, The Chance, Radio Days, Clarence Clemons, Hal Blaine, and John Prine.
Bill’s favorite part of teaching at Gerry’s is the camaraderie with the families of his students, with the students themselves, with fellow teachers, and with the staff here at the store. He says, “The staff are great and knowledgeable people, and the Provost family knows how to satisfy their customer base.” Bill focuses on making music fun for all involved, without neglecting the important fundamentals and approaches. He acknowledges that it is very important for each musician to develop their own style. He encourages his students to never give up when something seems too hard. He believes that with a little hard work, they will be able to play anything they set their mind to.
