Joe Sabol grew up in central Pennsylvania attending Selinsgrove Area High School. He went on to attend the University of Pittsburgh and Mansfield University, finishing with a BSEd in Music Education as a trombone major. He currently resides in Sunderland, MA with his wife Barbara, and children Rachael and Neal. He is still active as a musician in and around western Massachusetts.
Joe taught for five years as an instrumental music teacher and band director in Canton, PA. He worked for twenty years as an Educational Representative out of Greenfield, MA for Gribbon’s Music, as well as a regional then national chain of music stores. Appreciating the differences found in a local, family-owned business, Joe has been happily employed at Gerry’s Music. As one of our Educational Representatives, Joe travels to schools in western and central Massachusetts and central Connecticut. As a result, Joe has an uncanny ability to pack a great amount of instruments into the Gerry’s mini-van. Joe says that the best part of his job is that even though he is no longer a music teacher, he is still completely involved with music. All day, every day, Joe works with professionals in music education, the band and orchestra directors. More often than not he works as a consultant, rather than as a salesman. Besides being asked about equipment, he is flattered to be asked about pedagogy or band literature. Joe’s favorite department in the store is the Top Line Room. It is filled with professional horns, and having so many horns makes it easier to match the right instrument to the right musician. Also, he remarks that it a good thing that the store has a repair shop, because as a trombone player, he has let go of his slide on multiple occasions!
